How the UK Film Council is making non mainstream films more accessible

Posted by Unknown on 20:21 in ,
How the UK Film Council is making non mainstream films more accessible?

  • v  They are improving access
  • v  Raising awareness
  • v  Increasing information

They improve access by using a few different methods, these include the DSN (Digital Screen Network), Digital Downloads, and sometimes the movie isn’t shown in a cinema instead it goes straight to DVD. Their DSN is made up of two hundred and forty digital cinema screens. Another way they are improving access is by allowing digital movie distributors to distribute the non mainstream movies via their download service, which is normally used to download mainstream movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, but to help some digital distributors, will put links to similar movies on the mainstream pages, which will help persuade customers to buy or rent the non mainstream movies such as; SunShine (about a space voyage to the sun, to release a bomb to save the world)

They raise awareness by sharing up to £4 million each year between the UK non mainstream film institutions, they do this to provide the filming companies with enough money so they can promote their films to the general public.

To increase information they; use one main website to which will include all the non mainstream films information on it, e.g. where its showing, the release date, a descriptions, a link to the films individual website as well as reviews after its released. The website is aimed at anybody who is aiming to watch, download, buy or even rent a film. The website is the one of the UK’s leading website which provides information to film fans, the website is http://www.findanyfilm.com/.

Colour Scheme (Colour Spin Wheels)

I have been researching colour schemes, so we know which colours go well together, I have been doing this because I think that we shouldn't just think about the camera angles, locations and editing and other basic details, I believe that we should plan everything in deep details, so when it comes to producing the movie opening, we know what we will be doing, e.g. what the colours we want in our shots, location, where the actors should be standing, when it comes nearer to the time of filming, we should even start researching weather, etc.

Inspiration for Movie Openings and Title Sequences

have found a website which has chosen 30 unforgetable title sequences; some of the films included are;
  1. Catch Me if You Can
  2. Jame Bond Casino Royale
  3. Superbad
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/12/19/30-unforgettable-movie-title-sequences/

This is a video I found on YouTube and have edited it using TubeChope. liked this because I thought it was original and I might be able to add it into a movie opening.

This is a Slide Show with some Magazine Front covers and a T-shirt which I liked because they are interesting and I liked how some of them used the colours, how the people where standing, placed and how some of them have very minimal details on it, but they still look very effective. my favourite magazine front cover is slide 4, because I believe it's the most effective

Colour Schemes
This video is an example of a great colour scheme in videos, it's in a music video, made by The White Stripes, but I thought that it was a great example of a perfect colour schemes.

This is the Audi R8 V12, I like the colour scheme's  car on the publication picture

This is the Batman and Robin with Mr. Freeze film opening, I like the use of colour and lighting in this because it's effective and goes with theme of the film, that they are supposed to be in a cave.

I think that the Joker in the Dark Knight, would be good to base a character on, due to his personality in the film.

Mainstream vs. Independent Cinemas

Posted by Unknown on 12:48
Mainstream vs. Independent cinemas

Mainstream cinemas, like Vue or Cineworld, are normally much larger and not just in size of the business but also in location, than independent cinemas, due to the higher demand of mainstream films compared to independent films. This is because companies like Disney and Warner Brothers, are more popular, well-known and mainstream than independent institutions like Warp Films, for example if you questioned a group of random people in Leicester about their favourite films, there wouldn’t be many people who answered with a film like from an independent film institution.

You will find mainstream cinemas such as;

1. Vue

2. Cineworld

3. Odeon

4. Etc

In most town and near most out of town shopping centres such as Fosse Park. They will show most of the mainstream film institutions main films such as Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean and Warner Brothers Harry Potter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PetrAmq9fcw

Where as you actually have look to find a independent cinema such as Pheonix Arts in Leicester (for further information on local independent cinemas click Here) these companies show films like “Bright Star”.

Distribution - Licensing, Marketing and Logisitics

Posted by Unknown on 09:52 in , , ,
1. Licensing
Licensing is when your product is given a certificate, for example a film being given a 15 or a violent game being given an 18 because it’s inappropriate for anybody under the certain age.
The major US studios have their own distribution offices in 90+ markets across the world, whereas independent film companies have to distribute through other companies, due to not being able to afford to do it themselves.
Distributors will be offered theatrical rights which will allow them to put the Film onto a DVD, Reels, etcetera. Royalties are normally paid out to the producers of the Films, for each time it’s played to the public. After two years of the films being shown in cinemas, TV companies such as the BBC, ITV will be allowed to buy theatrical rights, which will allow them to air the films on live tv.

2. Marketing
Marketing is the method companies use to promote a product. The methods they use to advertise are;
• Product Placement is where a product e.g. Aston Martin is placed in a film like James Bond.
This is used because the company like Aston Martin will get above the line and widespread advertising; this can also turn into viral marketing because if there’s a product such as a nice car being used or featured in a film, people will speak about it.
• Synergy marketing – This is when a company like Disney uses a large company like McDonalds to advertise their latest films. For example you will see film like Pirates of the Caribbean on children’s McDonalds Happy Meal Boxes, cups and toys
This is used because Disney will get wider spread advertising, than just their own adverts, if McDonalds advertise their Happy Meals, they’ll advertise the film as well as.
• Viral marketing - viral marketing isn’t always but mainly is when a product/service is advertised by word of mouth. Flashed based games can also be a method of viral marketing.
Companies normally use around 50% of their budget.
Hollywood blockbusters have around 1000 to 2000 reels where as independent and small film producing companies have around 10 to 100 reels per film.

Types of Male Gaze (Marjorie Ferguson and Trevor Millum)

There are Nine main shots which are included in Male Gaze, These come from the Two of the main theorists in media, these are; Marjorie Ferguson and Trevor Millum

Marjorie Ferguson has Four main looks which include; the Chocolate Box, Invitational, Super Smiler and Romantic/Sexual, these looks are mainly used on female models.

Trevor Millum has Five main looks which he calls, Seductive, Carefree, Practical, Comic and Catalogue.

Marjorie Ferguson's

Chocolate Box
This is a look where a female model shows a slight smile, showing as minimal amount of teeth as possible, the lips tend to be closed and the face isn't shown full on face forward

Invitational
This look which focuses mainly upon the eyes, and mouth which will be closed although the model will be smiling with her head to one side, as if to be looking down upon the invitee.

Super Smiler
When a model is showing this look she'll show her full face with a full teeth smile with either her head tilted forwards or backwards.

Romantic or Sexual
This look includes both a female and a male in the picture, it will seem as if it is a dream and it should be very sexual.

Trevor Millum

Seductive
When a model is posing in the Seductive look they should have their eyes slightly closed, the expressions will be small, but will still show through, they will also aim to look confident.

Carefree
A Carefree look, can be linked to sports because it seems as if they are active and healthy.

Practical
A pratical will include a model who seems to be concentrating something, so thier eyes will be focussed and their mouth will be closed but not tightly.

Comic
This will be seem as if the actor/model is being studpid, comical, funny and it will normally be exagerated, to make the most as if to seem that what they are laughing at is very funny.

Catalogue
This will make the model have their eyes wide open, with a big smile as if they are not stupid but quite dumb.

Stereotypes

Posted by Unknown on 21:45 in
A one sided, exaggerated and prejudicial view of a social group or set of individual’s stereotypes can be dangerous because they appear to provide a justification nonracist or other discrimination behaviour. The media can be important in reinforcing stenotypes for example television drama used to cast block people in stereotypical roles as key workers or criminals (the roles for black roles is now more varied, although many need to go to America to find interesting roles.
The ways which events in the Muslim world have been reported in the media since 2001 onwards contribute to stereotypes of Muslims as religion fanatics, potential terrorists and illegal immigrants.
Stereotyping in the media can put pressure on authorities as well e.g. Report disruptive or mildly criminal behaviour by giving people as a description of Stereotypical terms (e.g. 'young things'), the police and the courts feel that they have to take a string action. Such Action in turn is reported by the media further reinforced the stereotype.

Bridget Jones' Diary, The Boat tha Rocked and James Bond Casino Royale

Bridget Jones’ Diary
Bridget Jones’ Diary used above the line marketing strategies because they used movie trailers, A Flash based Website which is interactive, posters, billboards and adverts on buses, bus stops etc.

The Boat that Rocked
This film used below the line marketing even though they used adverts in cinemas and TV adverts they didn’t have a big premiere or a bus stop adverts or billboards, their website is difficult to find due to having to go through Working Title’s website, and it not actually being a website which is solely based on the film. Also you can tell it’s not above the line because there isn’t any A-Class actors of actresses in the film.
,

James Bond Casio Royale
James bond movies use above the line marketing for a couple of reasons which include: a bigger budget, famous actors/actresses and its a famous and very popular film. You can tell that James Bond films uses above the line marketing because they have adverts on tv, cinemas screens, buses, billboards, bus stops, website, internet adverts. They also sell merchandise such as: posters, albums of music form the film, books, stationary. Sony sell “007” branded products such as Sony Vaio 007 laptops, phones, etc. In the film you will see product placement marketing methods such as Aston Martin cars. Viral marketing is used as well because they have interviews, reports and reviews on TV channels, social networks, and YouTube.

Marketing and Distribution

Marketing

Above the line means where the public can’t escape from see the adverts for example adverts on the side of buses. Below the line marketing is when the public can escape from seeing the adverts for example an exclusive interview of an actor or actress.
Advertising Strategies of:

2012

This film uses above the line marketing. They use advertising methods such as creating a user account on social networks and YouTube which shows videos, images etc of the video. They also plan on airing a 5 minute 38 second movie trailer across every major USA and Canada TV network. They spent $200 million on producing the film, of which half is normally spent on marketing the movie. American magazine ‘Variety’ says "The stunt will put the footage in front of 90% of all households watching ad-supported TV, or nearly 110 million viewers. When combined with online and mobile streams that could increase to more than 140 million"

Bunny and the Bull

Bunny and the bull uses below the line advertising,. They have a website, Facebook and Twitter page, but fans will have to search for these website if they want to know about the film.

A Serious Man

The film uses similar types of marketing to Bunny and the Bull, it is below the line. It has a website, trailers and social network pages but unlike 2012 you don’t see the adverts everywhere and you can escape from seeing them.

My Male Gaze Analysis (Clip of Two and a Half Men from Youtube)

Posted by Unknown on 21:52 in , ,

This clip is an example of Male Gaze. The camera operator has focused on the curves of Megan Fox’s body, and the clothes she is wearing in the TV show. The camera shots that are used in Two and Half Men, are used to show of Megan Fox’s body and how she acts and dresses is part of the mes en scene which will help to create a good male gaze shot.

This is a SlideShare application I found, which I liked it because it explains Male Gaze and includes a couple of videos from YouTube which help explain the Male Gaze.

Preliminary Task Evaluation Movie

Posted by Unknown on 16:53 in
On my video prelim I worked with Damon Coates, we managed the task by drawing a scene by scene plan of what we decided we were going to do, once we had drawn our plan we went to find a couple of friends who wanted to be in our film, after we had decided who was going to be in our film we went to find where would be a good place to film.
When we were planning our sequence we started by talking to each other about the different ideas we had and the different shots we had to take in to consideration the following points that we were goings to include in our prelim video project. We knew the basics shots that we would add to our film were;
·         To continual e.g. we were told to film a person walking through the door, so we would have to film from one side and then the other but we would have to have the person and door in the same place for each different shot of the door being opened.
·         We would also have to film the character walking across the screen
·         Then he/she would have to sit down opposite to another person and have a shot-reverse-shot conversation with each other.
After that we started talking to each other about what we would have the characters do and talk about we came up with idea of a person sneaking in to a office and looking through different secret documents and items, we then decided that he/she would pick up a laptop or phone and pick it up and scroll through files, then they would get caught by the owner of the office and documents, they would speak about what was happening and then the culprit would be shot. The inspiration that we used for our ideas was James Bond, we decided to reverse some of the roles, e.g. the person who normally gets shot in a James Bond film would be the owner of the office where as we decided that we wanted the secret agent who was sneaking around the office to be shot.
The technology that we used was a video camera, a tripod, Firewire 400 cable and an Apple eMac to do the film editing on. We also used a DV tape to capture our film on.
We decided to use the eMac because they are easy to use and the software allows you to do more features than the similar software on a windows computer. We also had better knowledge of the different advanced features which was included on iMovie.
The factors that we had to take into account when we were planning our film;
·         Where we would film
·         What it would be based on
·         Who we would use as characters
·         What they would say
·         What camera shots and angles we would us
·         Another was when we could film because we didn’t want the area to be in use also we had to consider when was best for us to meet up and film.
When filming the factors we had to take into account was;
·         The camera shots
·         The amount of light in the room
·         Where the actors would be positioned when filming
·         How we wanted the actors to act
When we was editing there was a number of different factors we took into account which are;
·         Which computer we should use a XP machine or a Mac
·         Which software to use
·         If we wanted a opening title scene
·         An end title scene
·         Where we should edit
Overall I think our movie turned out ok but I believe we could improve upon a lot if we did it again because of the experience of doing it the first time and now being able to see on the Mac some of the mistakes we made on the movie. I think that the parts to identify which worked well was our continuity with the shots on the door, also the high angle shot of the secret agent walking to the desk worked well. In hindsight I would use the tripod on the shot of the spy opening the door. I wouldn’t use have a shot of the camera man following the actor whilst zooming out from a close up shot of the door handle being opened.
Another thing I would improve is the not making the room as dark as it was because when it came to editing and reviewing the filming it was obvious that it was too dark in the room, even though you could still see the actors it wasn’t light enough. When you look through the camera it seems lighter that it was when reviewing the film.
I have learnt that when filming I shouldn’t make the room very dark unless it is necessary because it isn’t very visible when watching the film back on a computer, also I have learnt more about how to improve editing on iMovie. I believe that this will be very significant later on in my coursework because it will make my overall movie look less amateur and more professional which is what I aim for when producing a Movie.

Picture Prelim Evaluation

Posted by Unknown on 16:17 in

Picture (Magazine Front Cover)
I worked on my picture prelim work with Damon, Damon Took the pictures and together we planned how we wanted it to look like before we went and got out images, I used Photoshop to edit the images and to make a front cover for our final prelim piece.
We planned our sequence on paper before we even set out to get images, we drew up a draft design on paper in my book which we then went out to get our images for our front cover, once Damon had taken the photos and we were happy with them we went into the media computer room to edit them and make it into our front cover and contents page.
The technology that we used to complete the tasks we were given was;
·        A camera
o   Tripod
o   USB cable
·        Photoshop on the computer
We used the camera on automatic mode which allowed Damon to use the camera because we didn’t want to change any of the setting of the camera. Damon used the tripod for the shot of Tom playing football, and for the shot of the trainers we used on the contents page Damon didn’t use the tripod
The factors that we had to think about when we were planning, shooting and editing our front cover were;
Before we started shooting and editing, we sat down and talked about how we wanted our front cover to look. We got a piece of paper and started to design our magazine cover page. Once we had finished designing the cover we went out to find the shots that we wanted. We had to think about who would be on our front cover, we asked our friend Tom King who was happy to be on the front cover, we had to decide how we wanted him to act, where to stand and what he should be doing when we were taking photos of him. We also took a couple of photos of a pair of trainers we planned of featuring in the front cover. When editing our front cover we had to change a couple of ideas we used on our plan for example we said that we would use stars and circles to add text into. Also we couldn’t write Withers across the front of the magazine because we had taken photos of Tom King, due to Rhys Withers not wanting us to take pictures of him. Another thing we had to think about was that when we put some of the features into action of Photoshop we didn’t think some looked professional and they looked childish, so how was we going to put something to make them look better and of a higher and more professional standard.
I think our Magazine Front Cover was successful, we had to make a couple of improvements that we necessary, because our front cover wouldn’t look as professional as it does now it would look childish, but I do think that there are a few downfalls to our Print Prelim work, which are, where it says “New Total
       90’s
Reviewed”
I think we should have put the words “Total” and “90’s” on the same line because it would have looked better. Also I miss spelt Mourinho, i spelt it “moruinho” and put “99P” instead of “99p”

Whilst I have been completing these tasks I have learnt that even small mistakes like miss capitalising a ‘p’  on the price makes it look less professional after all of the hard work which you have to put into designing, shooting, editing and then rechecking it even if you miss the little error that has been made whilst editing it can make all the hard work which you have put into making a high quality professional magazine seem less high quality and professional. Another thing I learnt is I didn’t realise how much effort and thinking you have to put into shooting even before you actually turn the camera on.

The Royal Tennabaums

Posted by Unknown on 09:58
The film The Royal Tenenbaums is about a man called Royal Tenenbaum who is the dad, a mum called Etheline Tenenbaum, they have three children called Richie, Chas and Margot Tenenbaum. The children are found to be geniuses from a young age. In first section of the film you are introduced to them at a young age, and their lives, which are quite different to normal children’s. I decided to write about Richie’s life because I found him to be the most interesting person out of the three children, also because you didn’t really get introduced to Royal and Etheline.

Richie is very enthusiastic about tennis I can tell this because whenever you see him as a child he is always wearing a piece of tennis clothing be that a tennis head band or a whole kit, also another way I can say this is because he has been a tennis champion, he turned pro at seventeen and has won the US open twice. Another of his hobbies is to collect toy cars and to play the drums, he has a full size drum kit in his bedroom along with his large collection of toy cars which we see him lying next to with them lined up.

He has a falcon which I assume is his pet because even though the bird has its head covered to keep it calm like they would if they were about to be released to hunt, the family are based in the middle of New York.

Richie also tried and failed as an artist, all of his paintings are in the west wing of the main room which he turned into a gallery. All of the paintings are of his sister Margot, which shows they have a very close relationship another way I can tell this is that they ran away from home to the African wing of the museum for two weeks with Margot.

Even though you see him in sporting wear most of the time he is formal I can tell because he wears a jacket and trousers when he goes out with his dad.

I am assuming that he holds a local radio station talk because you see him talking into a microphone which is linked to a radio transmitter. I suspect he talks about tennis.

Unlike the other two children Margot and Chas, we are introduced to Richie’s friend who is always around his house before, after school, weekends, family visits and more.

I believe that Richie’s character role in the future of the film, will be both a hero and villain, I think that he’ll help is Sister which will make her see him as a kind of hero, I also think that he’ll do something that he shouldn’t like steel an item from somewhere like a shop or museum, which will cause him to need to be saved from what he has done. I am saying this because he has had a very productive and active life but at the same time it seems to be troubled especially because his mum and dad get divorced, even though he lives with his mum. His dad is his favourite out of his parents and he is his dad’s favourite child, his dad takes him out on weekends but Chas and Margot are never invited to go with them.

Evaluation of Practice

Evaluation of Practice

Magazine

Upload annotated magazine and give an overview of the conventions

1. Which magazines conventions does the magazine follow?

My magazine follows the conventions of a magazine by having a mid shot of the subject who is on the front cover; I have also used the use of two different texts and three different colours.

2. Which does it break?

Because it is a magazine I can’t show sound or movement.

3. How does the colour palette suit the target audience?

I think that the colour palette that has been used suits the target audience because it has colours which are normally used in football magazines and are liked by men, who are the target market for football magazines. I believe that red, black, grey and blue are

4. How do the cover lines entice the audience?

It captures the target audience’s attention because of the eye catching strap lines and sub headings

5. Does the magazine appeal to new or regular readers – how do you know?

I think the magazines appeals to the new audience because it looks professional and

6. Who distributes the magazine and what is the circulation?

The magazine is distributed every month and by Haymarket Publishing.

7. What have you learnt about producing a magazine front cover?

I have learnt, like in English there is a rule of 3, you should use three colours, three fonts maximum and that the mast head should cover the whole width of the front cover.

Film

Describe the task and how you responded to the task

1. How is the scene typical of a TV soap?

TV soaps follow the plan of a daily life, for example in the Eastenders show we watched, it started of with Peggy answering the phone, then she woke up family living in her house.

2. Which camera angles are used and why?

Establishing, a mid angle, close up and long shot which then went into a zoom. They used these shots because it helped to make their filming effective for example, an establishing shot is used to show the user the surroundings, the items in the scene like characters, cars, trees and animals, it helps to explain what is happening in the opening scene.

3. How accurate was your recreation?

I think our recreation of the episode of East Enders is quite accurate, although there are a few obvious differences between the two for example, we had to you a mobile phone, and blue tack to stick the phone to the wall, where as in the real episode it was a house phone screwed to the wall, We didn’t shoot the scenes in the correct rooms e.g. kitchens etc, also i think we did quite well overall, we got most of the camera angle and shot types correct along with the idea of using the laptop to record the theme tune and starting sequence from.

4. What were the successes and failings of your project?

I think one of the successes of the project is that overall the shots we got where ok, but a failure in our project was that we ran out of time editing the video and we had to use props that weren’t similar to the items used in the BBC.

5. What have you learnt about mise en scene?

I have learnt that mise en scene, is everything you see in that certain scene for example if you pause a film and the character is playing football for a professional club, you should look at the crowd, the colours, the lighting, the characters, basically everything except for sound because you can’t see it,

6. Was the lighting used in your project effective?

We didn’t use the lighting in our project very well, because we filmed our shots in one room and didn’t use it well enough in our episode.

7. What have you learnt about the importance of continuity?

I have learnt that the continuity is very important because you film people talking from one angle then the same conversation from another angle, you have to make sure that when you edit the two different shots that you can continue from the other shot e.g. if I was talking to someone and said “hello, how are you?” but half way though you switch shots you would have to film me saying the same words and edit them together.

8. Which techniques do you need to work on:

a) filming

b) editing
